Abstract

ABSTRACT Sani, Rahma, 2022 : An Analysis of the Tenth Grade Students’ Ability in Writing Memorable Experiences at SMA Adabiah 2 Padang Advisor: Dr. Lely Refnita, M.Pd. The purpose of this research is to find out the students’ ability in writing their memorable experiences as one type of personal recount text at SMA Adabiah 2 Padang. The researcher used the descriptive method for this research. The population of this research was the tenth-grade students of SMA Adabiah 2 Padang. The researcher used stratified random sampling to take the sample, and the number of samples was 62 students. The instrumentation for collecting the data in this research was a writing test in the form of writing memorable experiences. The reliability coefficient of the test is 0.97, so the test is reliable. The result of this research showed that in general, the tenth-grade students’ ability in writing memorable experiences at SMA Adabiah 2 Padang was high because 41 (66.1%) students had high ability in writing memorable experiences while 21 (33.9%) students had low ability in writing memorable experiences. In detail, 54 (87.1%) students had high ability and 8 (12.9%) students had low ability to write generic structures in writing memorable experiences. Moreover, 41 (66.1%) students had high ability and 21 (33.9%) students had low ability to use language features in writing memorable experiences. Last, 27 (43.5%) students had high ability and 35 (56.5%) students had low ability to apply mechanics in writing memorable experiences. It means the students of SMA Adabiah 2 Padang had problem to apply mechanics in writing memorable experiences. Based on the results of the research, the researcher gives some suggestions to teachers, students, and the future researchers. The teachers are suggested to give more exercises in writing mechanics. Besides, the teachers give more explanations about how to use language features, especially past tense, correctly when the students write memorable experiences, so the students can write memorable experiences well. The students should learn more about how to apply language features and mechanics in correct position when writing memorable experiences. In addition, the students should do exercises about memorable experiences to improve students’ abilities. The next researchers are suggested to study memorable experiences, especially about using mechanics. Moreover, the researcher suggests the next researchers to research memorable experiences from different aspects such as the research about the difficulty or the problem faced by the students in writing memorable experiences.
