Abstract

The aim in this research is to describe about the negative politeness strategies based on the theory proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987). Politeness strategies are used to formulate messages to save the hearers face when face threatening acts are inevitable or desire. This research discusses about what are the types of negative politeness strategies used by all the characters in Encanto movie and what are the factors that influence the characters in Encanto movie to employ those strategies. Data was taken from Encanto movie. From the data, the writer finds eight strategies of negative politeness. They are; (1) be conventionally indirect, (2) question, hedge, (3) be pessimistic, (4) minimize the imposition, (5) give deference, (6) apologize, (7) nominalize, and (8) go on record. The writer also finds the factors that influence the characters to employ negative politeness strategies in Encanto movie. There are payoff, social distance, relative power, and the absolute ranking of imposition. The writer used descriptive qualitative method. All of the findings will be discussed in this thesis.
