Abstract

Any word is a speech act and can be used as emotional expressions. The present study investigates the basic emotions or strong feelings revealed through words use in each type of the speech act of expressive. The speech act of expressive refers to the speaker‟s psychological or emotional state. In analyzing the data the writer used theory by Searle (1976) and Parrot (2001). The method used in this study were qualitative method that means to gather in depth analysis of the phenomenon of the study with the approach of pragmatic-discourse, especially speech act theory, and emotions. Data of this study were taken from the transcript posted in website Washington Post. From the data analysis, the results show: (1) types of expressive speech act, such as thanking, greeting, complimenting, wishing, and apologizing. Direct and indirect strategies used in each type of speech act of expressive. (2) various basic emotions conveyed by candidates in terms of love, joy, anger, and sadness. The findings have the implications for English studies in terms of vocabulary enrichment and develop communicative competence.
