Abstract

In this study, the writer analyzes about directive speech act. The object of this research is the directive speech act in the Hotel Transylvania movie. The type of this research is descriptive qualitative research. The data source of directive speech act in the Hotel Transylvania movie manuscript. The data were utterances in the form of words, phrases, clauses, and sentence spoken by the characters in the movie. In gathering data, the writer uses documentation methods.This research implements some theories. To describe the type of directive speech act, the researcher uses the theory of Searle (1976). To find out the types of context that influence of directive speech act, the researcher uses the theory of Crabtree (1991). The results show that the characters of the movie uses directive speech act such as requesting, suggesting, commanding, asking. From the findings, the most dominant directive speech act in this movie is directive speech act of commanding. The least frequently used directive speech act is suggesting. The context that influence in this research are physical context, epistemic context, sosial context, and linguistic context. The most dominant context in this research is epistemic context and the least frequently used context is linguistic context. This study is expected to give some useful insights in understanding about directive speech act. Keyword: Speech act, directive speech act, Hotel Transylvania
