Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the students’ ability in writing a explanation text after watching video on YouTube at class XI MIPA major in SMAN 13 Padang. The writer wants to find out the students’ ability to determine generic structure, to express the general statement, sequence of explanation, closing and to use appropriate language features. The design of this research is descriptive research. The population of this research is the students at class XI MIPA major in SMAN 13 Padang. Cluster random sampling technique was used in this research and the number of samples is 34 students. The instrument for collecting the data in this research is writing test. The writer used video as the stimulus to write a explanation text. Students were asked to watch video before they wrote a explanation text. The video is about explanation text of natural phenomena. To make the test reliable, the writer used inter – rater technique. The reliability of the test is 0.84. It means that the test is reliable. Then the test is valid in terms of content because the material about explanation text has been covered in curriculum and learned by the students. The result of this research in general shows that the students’ ability in writing a explanation text after watching a video is low. It is indicated by the data that 70.59% students get low ability. In detail, 82.35% students get low ability to express the general statement of the text, 61.77% students get low ability to express sequenced of explanation of the text, 79.42% students get low ability to express closing of the text, 94.12% students get high ability in using appropriate language features. Based on the result of this research, it can be concluded that the students’ ability in writing a explanation text after watching a video at class XI MIPA major in SMAN 13 Padang is low. The teachers should explain again how to write explanation text and give more exercises to students. Then the teachers should use varies media other than YouTube because there are still many media that can be used to improve students’ ability in writing the explanation text. Students are suggested to pay more attention to what the teachers’ explanation and do more exercises in writing explanation. Other researchers are suggested to study other aspects of writing which are composed of five aspects and this can be used as a reference for the next research.
