Abstract

The objective of this research was toknow how to increasing students’ vocabulary by method of guessing word for reading ability. The design of this research was Classroom Action Research (CAR). The population of this research was thestudents of. VII-1 MTsN Model Padang. The total number of the population members was 38. Then, the test was valid in term face validity and content validity because it had covered all material which student had learnt. The data were gathered byreading testgiven to the students. The researcher limited her research in the implementation of thestudents of. VII-1 MTsN Model Padang in Teaching Vocabulary by Method of Guessing Word for Increasing Reading Ability.To make the test reliable, the researcher used split half method. The result of the test was reliable. It is supported by the fact that the result of correlation of coefficient after doing the test was 0,48 (see Appendix 4). It was categorized as enough. Then, the test was valid in term of content validity because it had covered all material which student had learnt. From the result of analysis, the researcher found out from test 1 there were 38 students who did the test, 10 of the students got low score under the KKM and 28 students’ got high score, and the writer got the average from the test was 80,9. And from test 2 all students passed the KKM and the writer got the average from the test was 84,6. Thus there was improvement by 3,7 % from the average of cycle 1 and cyle 2 Based on the result above, the lecturers are suggested to minimize the students’ problems by giving appropriate method, motivation and contextual example during the learning and teaching vocabulary for increasing reading ability by method of guesing word.After students know their problems, they are suggested to find out some good ways to minimize their problems by following appropriate method,motivation and example. For the next researchers, it is suggested to study about some factors that cause students’problemsduring the learning and teaching vocabulary for increasing reading ability by method of guesing word Key words : Vocabulary, reading ability, GWM
