Abstract
The purpose of this research was to describe the students’ ability in writing a procedure text using silent video at English Department of Bung Hatta University. Procedure text is a text used to explain how to make something by using sequence of steps or method. The generic structure of procedure text is goal, materials, and steps. Related to this, the researcher used descriptive method. The population of this study was the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The total members of the population were 32 students. The researcher used total sampling techniques to select the sample. The data of this study were gathered by using writing test on procedure text. It was focused on materials and steps. The result of data analysis demonstrated that the reliability index of the test was 0.91. The result of data analysis showed that the students’ ability in writing procedure text using silent video at English Department of Bung Hatta University was moderate. It was proved by the fact that there are 4 students (12.5%) had high ability, 24 students (75%) had moderate ability, and 4 students (12.5%) had low ability. In term of writing the materials of procedure text, there were 0 students (0%) had high ability, 29 students (91%) had moderate ability, 3 students (9%) had low ability. In term of writing steps of procedure text, there were 4 students (12%) had high ability, 26 students (81%) had moderate ability, 2 students (7%) had low ability.in term of using the correct grammar of writing procedure text, there were 12 students (37%) had high ability, 7 students (22%) had moderate ability, 41 students (41%) had low ability. In term of vocabulary in writing procedure text, there were 1 students (4%) had high ability, 29 students (90%) had moderate ability, 2 students (6%) had low ability. In term of mechanics in writing procedure text, there were 8 students (25%) had high ability, 21 students (66%) had moderate ability, 3 students (9%) had low ability. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that ability of the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University was moderate. In line with this conclusion, the teachers are suggested to use silent video in teaching procedure text, the students are suggested to learn and do more exercises in writing procedure text and the next researcher is suggested to do relevant research from different point of view and another kind of text.
