Abstract

Every word is a speech act and can be used as an emotional expression from the speakers in conveying what they want to convey. The purpose of this research is to find out the types of expressive speech acts and the communication strategies used by the characters in each type of the expressive speech act. The speaker's psychological or emotional state is a reference for expressive speech acts. The researcher used the theory stated by Searle (1976) and Brown and Levinson (1987) for analyzing the data. In this study, the researcher used a qualitative method, which means collecting in-depth analysis of research phenomena with a pragmatic discourse approach, particularly speech act theory and strategic communication. The data of this research were taken from the Crazy Rich Asians movie. According to data analysis, the results show: (1) the greeting speech acts, apologizing, thanking, complimenting, protesting, complaining and congratulating; (2) the communication strategies were variously used by the characters. The various communication strategies delivered by the characters such as bald on record with and without redressive; bald on record with redressive by using positive politeness, and negative politeness strategy. The findings show the politeness strategies in expressing thanking, complaining, apologizing, and protesting. For the English learners, this research can improve their vocabulary and the ability to understand not only the meaning of words but also the intention behind that.
