Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe students` speaking ability to express and respond to an invitation. The population of this research was the second grade student of SMPN 29 Padang. The member of sample was 58 students, they were chosen by using Cluster random sampling technique. The data were collected through speaking test. To make the test reliable, the researcher used inter-rater technique. It means that there were two scorers to check students speaking. It was found that the correlation coefficient of two scores was 0.94. It means that the test was reliable. Then the test was valid in terms of content validity. The result of this research showed that the students’ speaking ability at SMPN 29 Padang to express and respond to an invitation in general was high. It was proved by the finding that 98.27% students had high ability. The second grade students’ speaking ability at SMPN 29 Padang in expressing the content was high. It was proved by finding that there was 96.55% students who had high ability. The second grade students ability to use grammar at SMPN 29 Padang was high. It was proved by finding that 86.20% students had high ability. The ability of the second grade students in choosing vocabulary to express and respond to an invitation at SMPN 29 Padang was high. It was proved by finding that 100% students had high ability. The ability of the second grade students in terms of pronunciation was high. It was proved by finding that there was 79.31% students who had high ability. The ability of the second grade students in fluency was high. It was proved by finding that 100% students had high ability. Referring to the results of this research, the researcher concluded that the second grade students` speaking ability to express and respond to an invitation was high. Dealing with the conclusion, English teachers can retain students’ ability, and students are suggested to retain their ability in expressing and responding to an invitation.
