Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the students’ ability in transforming direct speech into indirect speech at the first year students of SMAN 3 Pariaman. The sample of this study is 30 students taken randomly from the first year students of SMAN 3 Pariaman. The method used in this study was quantitative method and the technique used in this study was descriptive technique. In collecting the data, the grammar test is used in multiple choices form. The reliability index of grammar test was 0.59. It is classified as enough reliable. The result of this study showed that students’ ability in transforming direct speech into indirect speech was moderate with Mean was 26.7 and Standard Deviation was 4.5. It is indicated that 6 students had high ability (20%), 16 students had moderate ability (53%) and 8 students had low ability (27%). In Simple Present Tense form, the students’ ability in transforming direct speech into indirect speech was moderate. 7 students had high ability (23%), 17 students had moderate ability (57%), and 6 students had low ability (20%). Students’ ability in transforming direct speech into indirect speech in Present Continuous Tense was moderate; 8 students had high ability (27%), 15students had moderate ability (50%), and 7 students had low ability (23%). In addition, students’ ability in transforming direct speech into indirect speech was moderate; 5 students had high ability (17%). 18 students had moderate ability (60%), and 7 students had low ability (23). It means that the first year students at SMAN 3 Pariaman had moderate ability in transforming direct speech into indirect speech. In conclusion, students’ ability in grammar should be improved in order that their ability was moderate. The students are suggested to do more practices in improving their grammar mastery especially in transforming direct speech and indirect speech.
