Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the second grade students‟ conversation ability in expressing asking for and giving something at SMPN 27 Padang. The design of this research was descriptive. The population of this research was 238 students at the second grade of SMPN 27 Padang who are registered in 2016/2017 academic year. The result of researcher finds that the coeficient correlation of two scores was 0.75 (see Appendix 4). It means that the coeficient correlation of the test is high correlation, and it can be concluded that the test is reliable. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique in taking the sample. It means the sample was the class which is randomly selected as a sample. The result of this study showed that the students conversation ability in expressing asking for and giving something was high. In specific, there were 3 (10 ) having high ability and 27 (90 low ability in content (see Appendix 12), 29 (97 high ability and 1 (3 low ability in vocabulary (see Appendix 16), 21 (63 high ability and 9 ( 37 low ability in grammar(see Appendix 20), 18 (60 high ability and 12 (40 low ability in fluency (see Appendix 24), 5 (17 high ability and 25 (83 in pronunciation (see Appendix 28). The researcher found that the students had high ability in grammar, fluency, vocabulary in conversation. Based on the result of the research, the teacher are suggested to maintain students‟ ability and also improve it. English teachers are suggested to find the appropriate ways to improve students conversation ability especially in content, and pronunciation, by doing more practice and using it in daily life. The students are suggested to maintain their ability and improve it by practicing in daily life. For the students who have difficulties, she suggested students to do practice more especially in content, pronunciation in conversation. For the other researcher, by having the result of this research, the researcher suggested the next researcher to find out the students‟ difficulties in expressing asking for and giving something.
