Abstract

This research was aimed to describe the ability of the first grade students of SMP Bunda Padang to describe people. The design of this research was descriptive method. The population of this research was the first grade students of SMP Padang. The total number of population members was 15 students. The researcher used total sampling technique in taking the sample.. In collecting the data, the researcher used speaking test to describe people. It was focused on content, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and fluency. The researcher found the reability index of the test by using Pearson Product Moment. It was found the reliability index of the test was 0,71 (see Appendix 6). It means the test was reliable and it could be used as instrument of this research. The result of this research showed that in general the ability of the first grade students of SMP Bunda Padang to describe people was low. It was supoorted by the data that 93,33 % students had low ability in specific the students’ ability. It was provided by the fact that 8 students (53,33%) had high ability, the students’ ability in content to describe people was high. It was proved by the fact that 14 students (93.33%); had low ability, the students’ ability in using appropriate grammar to describe people was low. The students’ ability in using appropriate vocabulary to describe people was high. It was proved by the fact that 8 students (73,33%) had high ability. The students’ ability in pronuncing words to describe people was low. It was proved by the fact that 10 students (67%) had low ability. Then, the students’ ability in fluency to describe people was high. It was proved by the fact that 13 students (86,67%) had low ability. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that, the students’ speaking ability to describe people was low ability. Relating to this, the researcher suggested to the English teachers at SMP Bunda Padang to improve the students’ ability in describing people by give more practices about describing people in speaking . For students, they are suggested to learn harder in speaking skill, and expected to do more practices in order to increase their ability in describing people.
