Abstract
This research was aimed to find out a correlation between students’ reading habit and their motivation toward their reading comprehension of argumentative essay of the third year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University. The number of population was 49 students.Students were distributed into two classes; A and B. The researcher took 42 students as sample for try out and 49 students as sample forthe real test.The researcher gathered the data by using questionnaire to measure students’ reading habit and their motivation, and reading test to measure students’reading comprehension of argumentative essay. To analyzethe data, the researcher usedPerson Product Moment Formula and Double Correlation Formula. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that students’reading habit and their motivation was classified as moderate, and reading comprehension of argumentative essay was also moderate. In addition, she found that the value of coefficient correlation between students reading habit and reading comprehension of argumentative essay was .45 and r-table was .281(α 0.05, (df)n-2),and the value of cooeficient correlation between motivation and reading comprehension of argumentative essay. 0.02 and r-table was .281 (α 0.05, (df)n-2). She found that the value of coefficient of three variables was 12.02 and f- table was 3.23 (α 0.05) and (df) n-k-1 (46)(see appendix 31). Therefore, the relationship between three variables, students reading habitand their motivation and their comprehensionwas significant. Learning from the result, it can be concluded there was a significant correlationbetween students’ reading habit and their motivation toward their reading comprehension of argumentative essay of the third year students English Department of Bung Hatta University. Related to the conclusion, it is suggested to the lecturers improve students’ reading habit and their motivation, to improve their reading comprehension.
