Abstract

The aim of this research was to describe the students’ speaking ability in offering, accepting, and declining something at SMPN 22 Padang. The design of this research was descriptive. The population of this research was the eighth grade students at SMPN 22 Padang with the total numbersss of population was 130 students. They were distributed into four classes, class VIII 1, VIII 2, VIII 3, VIII 4. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique to select the sample. The total number of sample members was 33. The data were collected through speaking test. The researcher asked the students to do dialogue in pairs in front of the classroom. The researcher only measured the ability of the eighth grade students’ speaking ability in offering, accepting, and declining something by considering five components of speaking: content, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and fluency. Firstly, she presented the raw score of each sample, calculated average score,calculated converted score, classified the students who got high and low ability and counted the percentage of them. Based on the result of data analysis, the eighth grade students’ speaking ability in offering, accepting, and declining something at SMPN 22 Padang in general was low. It was proved by the evidence that there were 60.6% (20)students classified into having low ability in offering, accepting, and declining something. More specifically, 54.5% (18)students were classified into having high ability in expressing idea(content), 63.64% (21) students were classified into having low ability in using grammar, 72.73% (24) students were classified into having high ability in using appropriate vocabulary, 63.64% (21) students were classified into having low ability in terms of pronunciation, and54.55% (18) students were classified into having low ability in tems of fluency. Based on the research finding, it can be concluded that the speaking ability of the eighth grade students in offering, accepting, and declining something was low. Relating to this conclusion, she suggests English teachers to find the appropriate ways to improve students speaking ability especially in grammar, pronunciation and fluency. The teacher may ask students to do more practiceeveryday. She also suggests English teacher to improve their students speaking ability, the English teacher should give the students the opportunities to communicate with other students in their class by using English to increase their ability in expressing idea, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency. the reseacher suggested the students who had difficulties to more practice especially in grammar, pronunciation and fluency in speaking. Then she also suggested students to practice English everyday.It is suggested to other researchers to find out the students’ difficulties in offering, accepting, and declining something in speaking.
