Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the ability of second year students at SMAN 3 Lubuk Basung in writing narrative text. The design of this research was descriptive. The total members of population were 119. They were distributed into five classes, two classes are exact science and three classes are social science. The resercher used stratified random sampling technique in selecting the sample. Data of the research were students’ scores to write narrative text. The data were collected by using writing test as instrument. Then, he analyzed the data by computing Mean (M) and Standard Deviation (SD). From the result of data analysis, the researcher found that the ability of the second year students of SMAN 3 Lubuk Basung in writing narrative text was moderate and it is indicated by the fact that 70,45% had moderate ability(see Appendix 9). In specific, their ability in writing orientation was moderate and it is indicated by the fact that 77,28% had moderate ability (see Appendix 13), their ability in writing complication was moderate and it is indicated by the fact that 79,55% had moderate ability (see Appendix 17),their ability in writing resolution was moderate and it is indicated by the fact that 75 % had moderate ability (see Appendix 21), their ability in applying language features was moderate and it is indicated by the fact that 81,82% had moderate ability (see Appendix 25), their ability in using appropriate vocabulary was moderate and it is indicated by the fact that 75% had moderate ability (see Appendix 29 ), their ability in applying mechanics was moderate and it is indicated by the fact that 68,18% had moderate ability (see Appendix 33). Due to the finding of this study, the English teachers are suggested to consider their strategy in teaching and give more exercises to improve students’ ability to write narrative text. For students, they are suggested to study, and to do more exercises to write narrative text. For further researcher, it is suggested to study the other relevant aspects in writing narrative text.
