Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the second grade students’grammatical errors in writing recount text based on serial pictures at SMP N 27 Padang. The designofthisresearchwas descriptive. In this research, the population was the second grade students of SMP N 27 Padang. In selectingthesample,theresearcher usedconveniencesamplingtechnique. The number of the population members was 226 students. They were divided into eight classes; class VIII.1 until VIII.7. The sample of this research was 29 students. The instrumentation used to get the data was a writing test. To know the reliability of the test, the researcher used inter-rater technique. The reliability index of the test was .99. It means the test was reliable. The result of analyzing data showed that the second grade students of SMP N 27 Padang made grammatical errors in omission, addition, and misformation errors in writing a recount text based on serial pictures. In general there were three types of grammatical errors made by students. They were omission errors made by 11 (37.84) students, addition errors was made by 2 (6.88%) students, and misformation errors made by 28 (96.32%) students. In specific, there were 11 (37.84%) students who made grammatical errors in omission consisting of omission of be made by 5 (17.2%) students, omission of article made by 4 (13.76%) students, omission of preposition made by 2 (6.88%) students. There were 2 (6.88%) students who made grammatical errors in addition of be before verb. There were 28 (96.32%) students who made grammatical errors in misformation consisting of misformation of verb made by 24 (82.56%) students, misformation of article was made by 2 (6.88%) students, and misformation of be was made by 2 (6.88%) students. There were no studenst making grammatical errors in misordering. Consequently, the researcher suggests the teachers to minimize the students who made grammatical errors especially in misformation by giving more exercises in writing a recount text. For the students, they were suggested to learn more and do the exercises in writing a recount text and also often open the dictionary and memorize the past form of verb in simple past tense.
