Abstract

The aim of this research was to describe the ability of the second year students’ in writing imperative sentences at SMP Negeri 27 Padang in writing imperative sentences.The design of this research was descriptive research. The population of this research was the second year students of SMP Negeri 27 Padang. The number of population members were 238 students. They were distributed into seven classes. To take the sample, the researcher used cluster random sampling and class A and B had been choosen to become the sample of this research. The data of this research were the students’ scores in writing imperative sentences. To collect the data, the researcher used writing test. The data were analyzed to find out the percentage and the number of the students who got high, moderate and low ability on each kind of imperative sentence. The result of analyzing data showed that the ability of the second year students at SMP Negeri 27 Padang in writing affirmative request sentences was moderate. It was proved by the fact that there were 17 students (50,00%) had moderate ability. Their ability in writing affirmative command sentences was moderate and it can be seen by the fact that there were 15 students (44.12%) had moderate ability. Their ability in writing negative command sentences was high. It can be seen by the fact that there were 20 (58.82%) had high ability. However, in general the students’ ability in writing imperative sentences was low, It can be proved that there were 12 students (35.29%) had high ability 7 students (20.59%) had moderate ability and 15 students (44.12%) had high ability. Based on the finding discussed above it can be concluded that the researcher suggests teachers to give more exercises about imperative sentences. For the students, they have to study more about imperative sentences, and to do more practices in writing imperative sentences.
