Abstract

In this study, the writer analyzes metaphor. The writer analyzes the types and functions of metaphor found in English quotes. This study uses a qualitative method. The data from this study were taken from the internet, Instagram, and Pinterest. The writer applies Ullman and Ortony’s theories for the types and functions of metaphor. From the analysis of the data, the writer found several types of metaphor, namely anthropomorphic, animal, from concrete to abstract, and synaesthetic metaphor. The writer also found several functions of metaphor which are expressing the inexpressibility of action, shorten the language, and showing the vividness of emotional states. The writer analyzed 50 data of metaphor in English quotes. Keywords: anthropomorphic, animal, synaesthethic.
