Abstract

This research is studying the flouting maxims in Sherlock Holmes Movie, this research will study about the conversation that is used by the characters in the movie. In this research have 2 objectives, to achieve the objectives, the research uses Cutting’s theory about the term of flouting maxim. The method used for this research is qualitative method. The movie was downloaded from the internet and also the researcher use the English subtitle for analysis the conversation. The subtitle also was downloaded from the internet. As the results, it finds 4 types of maxims that flouted by the characters in the Sherlock Holmes Movie, 30 data that found use flouting maxim in the movie. There are 3 flouting maxims of quantity that flouts by the characters, 8 flouting maxims of quality are flouted in by the characters, 18 flouting maxims of relation that flouted by the character. And 1 flouting maxim of banter that are flouted by the characters in the movie, as the results of the finding, flouting maxim of relation are dominantly get flouted by the characters in the movie. The reason why the characters use the flouting maxim of relation oftenly, the analysis of this research is depend on the context that happend in the movie by connecting with the setting, that is with all conditions (place, topic of conversation, environtment, etc.) the setting is what causes the characters to act.
