Abstract

In this paper, the writer analyzes anxiety and defense mechanism experienced by the main character described in the novel Turtles All The Way Down by John Green. This novel illustrated the condition of the main character has obsessive compulsive disorder, where this disease experienced by many people that cannot be avoided. This analysis aims to explain the anxiety and defense mechanism of the main character. The writer analyzes using theory Psychoanalysis according to Spielberger and Sigmund Freud. In this study, the writer applied method of interpretation and close reading to gain understanding of the novel. The study reveals that the anxiety are experienced by the main character in the form of state and trait anxiety. The defense mechanisms are divided into five categories which are displacement, denial, repression, fantasy and turning against. In conclusion, the anxiety is unpleasant feelings which results the main character in endanger and threaten and affects the main character cannot socializing with the environment and doing daily activities as a normal people.
