Abstract

Language is a complex human phenomenon as all attempts to define and to define the phenomenon the writer do the analysis the data by using theory that cited from , Searle (1976) defines that there are five types of directive speech acts which contains, speech act of requesting, speech act commanding, speech act of suggestion, speech act of asking, speech act of forbidding. The data was taken from the Toy Story 4, one of the Toy Story movie franchise, the reason the writer take this movie as source of the data because there are many speech acts of directive appear in the movie. The method that the writer use qualitative method it means to achieve the data from the utterance from the characters with the pragmatics approach. The result of the research reveal that there are five types of the speech act of directive that appeared in the source of the data which used by the characters in the source of the data the total of the data that found by the writer is 92 data including all five types, the second finding is the strategies that used within the speech act of directive there are three strategies that did not appear in the source of the data, the most used speech act types is speech act of requesting which is 31 data. The conclusion of the research the speech act of directives there can be found every types of the directive speech act are different and the uses of the types also different, according to the situation of the user and the condition of the user and listeners. The result implicates for English study in terms of speech act of directive enrichment and develop better communication atmosphere. Keywords: Speech act of directives, pragmatics, utterances.
