Abstract

ABSTRACT Merti, Lesina. 2021. The Fisrt Year Students’ Speaking Ability After Learning Using Google Meet Media at English Department of FKIP, Bung Hatta University. Thesis. English Department of Bung Hatta University. Advisor : Dra. Ernati, M.Pd. The purpose of this research is to find out the first year students’ speaking ability after learning using google meet at the English Department of FKIP, Bung Hatta University. The population of this research was the first year students who registered in the academic year 2020/2021. The members of the sample were 30 students, and they were chosen by using total sampling technique. The data was collected through speaking test. To make the test reliable, the researcher used inter-rater method. It means that there were two scorers to check the score of the students’ speaking test. The correlation coeficient of two score was 0.93 (very high correlation). It means that the test was reliable. The design of this research is descriptive research. The result of this research showed that the first year students’ speaking ability after learning using google meet media at English Department of FKIP, Bung Hatta University was excellent. It was found that 100% students got excellent in the students’ speaking ability after learning using google meet. In specific the students’ speaking ability in expressing idea (content) was excellent. It was proved by finding that 93,33% students had excellent ability. The students’ speaking ability in pronunciation was excellent. It was proved by finding that 100% students had excellent ability. The students’ speaking ability in vocabulary was excellent. It was proved by finding that 100% students had excellent ability. The students speaking ability in grammar was good. It was proved by finding that 46,67% students had good ability. And the students’ speaking ability in fluency was good. It was proved 90% students had good ability. Based on the result of this research, it can be concluded that the first year students’ speaking ability after learning using google meet at the English Department of FKIP, Bung Hatta University was excellent. Therefore, the lecturers are suggested to motivate students to keep students’ speaking ability excellent by asking students’ practice speaking everyday. The students are suggested to keep their ability excellent in speaking skill, but they should improve their ability in the aspect of speaking such as grammar and fluency. The researcher suggest for the next researcher to find out the causes of the students’ speaking ability in grammar and fluency is good (not excellent). Keywords: speaking ability and google meet.
