Abstract

ABSTRACT Billa. S. 2021. An Analysis of the Second Year Students’ Ability in Writing An Exposition Paragraph at the English Department of Bung Hatta University Advisors: Dr. Drs H. Welya Roza, M.Pd The purpose of this research was to describe the students’ ability in writing an exposition paragraph at the English Department of Bung Hatta University. The design of this research is descriptive method. The population of this research was the second year students at the English Department of Bung Hatta University. The researcher used total sampling technique and the sample was 37 students. The data were collected through writing paragraph test. To make the test reliable, the researcher used the interrater method. The result of the analysis showed that the test was reliable. It was supported by the fact that the coefficient correlation was 0.91 which was categorized as a very high correlation (see appendix 4). Then the test was valid in terms of content because the material of writing exposition was learned by the students. In general, all of the students of second year students have been able to write an exposition paragraph. It was shown by the fact that 73% of students got excellent ability, 21% of students got good ability, 3% of students got fair ability, and 3% of students got poor ability (see appendix 5). In expressing the content of the paragraph, 86% of students got excellent ability, 11% of students got good ability, 0% of students got fair ability, and 3% of students got poor ability (see appendix 7). In organizing the relevant idea of the paragraph, 62% of students got excellent ability, 19% of students got good ability, 5% of students got fair ability, and 14% of students got poor ability (see appendix 9). In using appropriate vocabulary, 35% of students got excellent ability, 35% of students got good ability, 16% of students got fair ability, and 14% of students got poor ability (see appendix 11). In using correct grammar, 51% of students got excellent ability, 27% of students got good ability, 8% of students got fair ability, and 14% of students got poor ability (see appendix 13). In using appropriate mechanics, 40% of students got excellent ability, 22% of students got good ability, 19% students got fair ability, and 19 of students got poor ability (see appendix 15). Based on the result of this research, it can be concluded that the second year students’ ability in writing an exposition paragraph at the English Department of Bung Hatta University was excellent. The researcher wants to give some suggestions to lecturers and students. Even the students have gotten excellent ability in writing an exposition paragraph, the lecturer should not be quickly satisfied and improve it by giving exercise. For the students, the researcher hopes from many exercises that the lectures gave to the students, it would help them in improving their ideas in writing, especially for writing exposition paragraph. Much more the researcher hopes that this research can be useful for those who need it to improve their exposition paragraph writing skills.
