Abstract

This research was aimed to describe listening ability in comprehending the Plot of Short Movie at First Year Students of English Department Bung Hatta University. The design of this research was descriptive method . The population of this research was the first year students of English Department Bung Hatta University. The total number of population members were 27 students. There were 27 students became sample. The researcher used total sampling technique in taking the sample. In collecting the data the researcher used listening test, a kind of multiple choice test. It was focused on listening comprehending the plot of short movie. The researcher tried it out to the population out of the sample before giving it to the sample . The researcher found the reliability index using split half method ,Pearson ProductMoment Formula andSpearman Brown Formula . It was found the was reliable and it could be used as instrument of this research. The result of this research showed that the listening ability of the first year students of English Department Bung Hatta University in comprehending the plot of short movie was good. It was proved by the fact that 15 students (55,55%) students had good ability. In detail, the students listening ability in comprehending exposition of short movie was good. It was proved by the fact that 8 students (29,26%) had good ability. The students listening ability in comprehending rising action was good . It was proved by the fact that 9 students (33,33%) had good ability .The students listening ability in comprehending climax was low. It was proved by the fact that 21 students (74,07%) had low ability . Then, the students listening ability in comprehending resolution was low. It was proved by the fact that 16 students (59,25%) had low ability. Based on the findings , It can be concluded that the students ‘ ability in comprehending the plot of short movie was good. Relating to this, the researcher suggest to English lecturer’s at Bung Hatta University to give more exercise about listening comprehending the plot. In order to improve listening ability.The students are suggested to practice listening to the plot of the movie, especially listening to climax and resolution to improve their ability to become very good
