Abstract

In this thesis, the writer analyses formal and casual style in The Pursuit of Happyness movie which is differentiated according to Holmes’s theory (2001). This style can be identified based on the circumstances in which the speaker is speaking, whether it is formal or informal, public or private, and by the people who listen to, when the situation of speaking, whether they are friends, parents, or strangers. The purposes of this research are to identify the characteristics of formal and casual language style and to identify the factors of speaker utterance in using formal and casual language style which are used by the characters in the pursuit of happyness movie. The method used in analyzing is a qualitative descriptive method. In this thesis, the writer analyses the data by identifying the formal and casual style movie based on Holmes's theory, and the social factor of using formal and casual style by the speaker in the pursuit of happyness movie. And also, the writer uses the script of the movie to analyze the data. In this study, researchers contain some theories and references that are related to the research, related to the topic, or the supporting theory to help answer the research problems, and some previous studies. The result shows that there are 24 data of speakers using the formal language style and 39 data for the casual language style. This research also reveals that participants and the setting are the most dominant social factors in the pursuit of happyness movies that affected the use of formal and casual language styles.
