Abstract

In this thesis, the author analyzed substitution which is one type of grammatical cohesion according to the theory of Halliday and Hasan (1976). Substitution is one of the types of grammatical cohesion which is analyzed as a conjunctive word in a sentence, which is divided into three types, namely; 1) Nominal Substitution, 2) Verbal Substitution, 3) Clausal Substitution. The purpose of this research is to identify the type and function of substitution in the story. The method used in this research is the descriptive qualitative method. In this thesis, the researcher used the data analysis technique of the Miles and Hubberman model which has three stages, there are data reduction, data display, and conclusion. In this study, there are also several theories related to the object of this research. The results of this research were conducted there were 51 data containing substitution, the 51 data were divided into; 15 Nominal Substitutions, 14 Verbal Substitutions, and 22 Clausal Substitutions.
