Abstract

Politeness phenomena do not only occur in daily conversations, but also in the dialogue found in a movie. Rise of The Guardians movie is one of the interesting subjects to be analyzed in terms of positive politeness strategies. This movie tell about unfamiliar characters and then they get close because they work together for one purpose and learn how important politeness to each other. Thus, the purposes of this research are (1) Describe the kinds of positive politeness strategies employed by the characters in the Rise of The Guardians movie. (2) Explain the factors that influence the character to use the strategy in the Rise of The Guardians movie. This research employed descriptive qualitative research. It is done by collecting data, analyzing data that is a positive politeness strategy from th eutterences of characters, giving explanations and drawing conclusions The data in this research is a form of utterance spoken by the characters in Rise of The Guardians movie. The results of this research are two points, the first point is the writer find 10 strategies from 15 strategies based on Brown and Levinson, the writer found 15 dialogues contained in the 10 strategies of Positive Politeness and the most found is the fourth strategy, namely Using in-group identity markers, there are 4 dialogues found in that strategy. The second point is the writer found 2 factors influence the character to empoly the strategy, they are payoff and circumtances, Payoff factor found in the entire of the data and 2 factors of cirmuncances namely Social Distance and Power Rating found in 7 data.
