Abstract
The purpose of this research was to describe the ability of the second year students in Bung Hatta University in comprehending words having general and specific ideas in paragraph. The design of this research was descriptive research. The population of this study was the second year students in Bung Hatta University. The number of population members was 56 students. The researcher used total sampling technique due to the population was less than 100. The instrument used to get the data was reading test. The researcher found the reliability of the test was high (0,83). It means that the test was reliable. Then, the test was valid in content validity. The result of the data analysis showed that the students’ ability in comprehending words having general and specific ideas in paragraph was moderate. It is proved that, 14.28% students had high ability, 62.50 % of students’ had moderate ability and 23.22% students had low ability in comprehending words having general idea in paragraph. It also found 21.43 % students had high ability, 66.07 % students had moderate ability and 12.50 % students had low ability in comprehending words having specific ideas in paragraph on the second year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University. Learning from the result, it can be concluded by the students’ ability in comprehending words having general and specific ideas in paragraph was moderate. The researcher suggests to English lecturers of English Department, Bung Hatta University to give more exercises about words having general and specific ideas in paragraph. For the students, they are suggested to learn more and did more exercises to comprehend words having general and specific ideas in paragraph. The researcher suggests to the next researcher to find out the students’ problem in comprehend words having general and specific ideas in paragraph.
