Abstract

The type of this research was correlational design. This research was aimed to finding out the correlation between listening habit of the first year students of English department of Bung Hatta University and their vocabulary mastery. The population of this research was all of the first year students of English Department at Bung Hatta University who register in 2015/2016 academic year, the number of population was 38 students. Size of sample was 38, due to the number of students, the researcher used total sampling method. The researcher used two instruments to collect the data. First was questionnaire to collect data on students’ listening habit (X) and second was vocabulary test to collect data on students’ vocabulary mastery (Y). Based on the result of data analysis, it was found that rcalculated 0.72. The value of rtable with level of significance 0.05 and degree of freedom (df = n-2) was 0.31. It means that rcalculated was bigger than rtable (0.72 > 0.31). The hypothesis “there is a significant correlation between listening habit of the first year students at Bung Hatta university and their vocabulary mastery” was accepted From the result of data analysis, it can be concluded that there was a significant correlation between listening habit of the first year English students of Bung Hatta University and their vocabulary mastery. It means that if the students’ listening habit is good, their vocabulary mastery is good too. The researcher proposes suggestions. First is for lecturere, in order to improve students’vocabulary mastery , lecturer should make effort to increase students’ habit in listening for example use listening materials in learning process and make their students’ listening skill become better. Second is for students, in order to improve their vocabulary mastery, they should learn more, and listen to English song as much as they can. Furthermore they can analyze the songs to get meaning of vocabulary in them.
