Abstract

This research was attempted to describe the third year students’ ability in understanding cause-effect paragraphs at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The design of this research was descriptive. The members of population of this research were 54 students. The researcher used total sampling technique in taking the sample. In collecting data, the reseacher used reading test. Before she gave real test, it was tried out. Based on the result of the try out, the researcher found the reability coeffecient for total test was (0.88). This reasearch found that ability of the third year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University was moderate in understanding cause-effect paragraphs. It was proved by the fact that 30 students (56%) got moderate in understanding cause-effect paragraphs, 47 students (87%) got moderate in understanding topic sentence, 37 students (68%) got moderate in understanding supporting details and 41 students (76%) also got moderate in understanding concluding sentence of cause- effect paragraphs. Based on the findings of this research, it can be concluded that ability of the third year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University was moderate in understanding cause-effect paragraphs. It is necessary for the lecturers to give more explanation and exercises about understanding of the elements of cause-effect paragraphs. The students are suggested to do more exercises to understand the topic sentence, supporting details and concluding sentence. The further researchers are suggested to study about factors that make students have difficulties in understanding cause-effect paragraphs.
