Abstract

This research was aimed to find out the correlation between students’ vocabulary and grammar mastery towards their ability in writing an argumentative essay in Bung Hatta University. The hypothesis of this research was that if there was a significant correlation between students’ vocabulary and grammar mastery toward their ability in writing argumentative essay in Bung Hatta University. The number of population was 54 students. There were distributed into two classes; A and B. The researcher took 30 students as sample by using simple random sampling technique. The researcher gathered the data by using vocabulary test, grammar test, and writing argumentative essay. To analyze the data the researcher used the Person Product Moment Formula and Multiple Correlation Formula. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that 36 % students’ vocabulary was very good. She also found that 54% students’ grammar mastery was good. Then, 57% students’ writing ability was good. The value of coefficient correlation between students’ vocabulary and writing ability in argumentative essay was 0.99. The value of coefficient correlation between students’ grammar mastery and writing ability was 0.61. The value of coefficient correlation of students’ vocabulary and grammar mastery toward their ability in writing argumentative essay was 0.98 and its f- counted was 165.58. Therefore, the relationship between three variables, between students’ vocabulary mastery and grammar mastery towards their ability in writing argumentative essay was significant. It means that the alternative hypothesis stating “there is a significant correlation between students’ vocabulary and grammar mastery toward their ability in writing argumentative essay in Bung Hatta University” was accepted. Learning from the result, there was a significant correlation between students’ vocabulary and grammar mastery toward their ability in writing argumentative essay in Bung Hatta University
