Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the ability of the second grade students of MTsN Parak Lawas to write simple sentence in simple past tense by using regular and irregular verbs. Descriptive method was used as the design of this research. The number of population members was 207 students. The researcher used convenience sampling to select the sample and the total number of sample members was 41 students. The instrument used to get the data was writing test. The students were asked to write 24 simple sentences in simple past tense using regular and irregular verbs: 3 affirmative sentences using regular verbs, 3 affirmative sentences using irregular verbs, 3 negative sentences using regular verbs,3 negative sentences using irregular verbs, 3 yes/no questions using regular verbs, 3 yes/no questions using irregular verbs, 3 information questions using regular verbs and 3 information questions using irregular verbs. It was found that the reliability index of the test was very high (.99). It means that the test was reliable. Then, the test was valid in terms of content validity. The result of this research showed that in general the second grade students of MTsN Parak Lawas had low ability in writing simple sentences in simple past tense by using regular and irregular verbs. It was proved by the fact that 44.74% students had high ability and 55.26% students had low ability. In detail, 47.37% students had high ability and 52.63% students had low ability in writing simple affirmative sentences in past tense using regular verbs, 52.63% students had high ability and 47.37% students had low ability in writing simple affirmative sentences in past tense using irregular verbs, 47.37% students had high ability and 52.63% students had low ability in writing simple negative sentencesin past tense using regular verbs, 36.84% students had high ability and 63.16% students had low ability in writing simple negative sentences in past tense using irregular verbs, 60.53% students had high ability and 39.47% students had low ability in writing yes/no questions in past tense using regular verbs, 55.26% students had high ability and 44.74% students had low ability in writing yes/no questions in past tense using irregular verbs, 31.58% students had high ability and 68.42% students had low ability in writing information questions in past tense using regular verbs and 47.37% students had high ability and 52.63% students had low ability in writing information questions in past tense using irregular verbs.
