Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the third year students’ ability to use noun clause in writing complex sentence at English Department of Bung Hatta University. Specifically, it aimed at describing the students’ ability to use noun clause by using wh-word clauses and if/whether clauses as subject and object in simple past tense. The design of this research was descriptive research. The population of this research was the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University who have passed Structure I, II, III, IV and Advanced Structure. In selecting the sample, the researcher used total sampling technique. The number of sample was54students. The result of the data analysis showed that the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University were classified into having moderate ability to use noun clause in writing complex sentence in simple past tense. It was proved by the fact that 32 students from 54 students (59.25%) had moderate ability. In details, it was proved by the fact that12 students (22.23%) had high ability and10 students (18.52%) had low ability. The students’ ability to use noun clause by using wh-word clauses as subject in writing complex sentence in simple past tense was moderate. It was proved by the factthat38 students (70.37%) had moderate ability. The students’ ability to use noun clause by using if/whether clauses as subject in writing complex sentence in simple past tense was moderate. It was proved by the fact that 30 students (55.56%) had moderate ability. The students’ ability to use noun clause by using wh-word clauses as object in writing complex sentence in simple past tense was moderate. It was proved by the factthat37students (68.52%) had moderate ability. The students’ ability to use noun clause by using if/whether clauses as object in writing complex sentence in simple past tense was moderate. It was proved by the fact that 39 students (61.11%) had moderate ability. Based on the result, English teachers are suggested to see this research as a reference in order to see the students’ ability in writing complex sentence by using noun clause. For the students, they should study more about complex sentence especially by using w-word clauses and if/whether clauses in noun clause.
