Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the ability of the third year students’ ability in writing expository paragraph at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The design of this research was descriptive in nature. The population of this research was 54. In selecting the sample, the researcher used total sampling technique. The number of sample was 54 students. The instrument used to get the data was writing test in form of paragraph. The researcher did real test to the students. The researcher found the reliability of the test by using standard deviation. It was found that the coefficient correlation was high (.90) (see Appendix 3). It means that the test was reliable. The result of the data analysis showed that the third year students of Bung Hatta University had moderate ability. It was proved by the fact that the ability of the third year students of Bung Hatta University to organize ideas (to write topic sentence, supporting sentence, and concluding sentence) was moderate. It is supported by the fact that there were 9% (5 students) got high ability, 84% (45 students) got moderate ability, and 7% (4 students) got low ability. The ability of the third year students of Bung Hatta University to use appropriate words (vocabulary) was moderate. It is supported by the fact that there were 15% (8 students) got high ability, 50% (27 students) got moderate ability, and 35% (19 students) got low ability. The ability of the third year students of Bung Hatta University to use grammar was moderate. It is supported by the fact that there were 15% (8 students) got high ability, 68% (37 students) got moderate ability, and 17% (9 students) got low ability. The ability of the third year students of Bung Hatta University to apply mechanics was moderate. It is supported by the fact that there were 0% (0 student) who got high ability, 93% (50 students) who got moderate ability, and 7% (4 students) got low ability. Based on the result of the research, the students are expected to learn more and to do more exercises in writing expository paragraph. Furthermore, the researcher suggests the next researcher to find out students’ ability in reading and comprehending expository pragraph.
