Abstract

The aim of this study was to describe the students’ problem in previewing recount text. Relating to this, the researcher used descriptive method. The population of this study was the third year students at English Department ofBung Hatta University. The total members of this population were 54. In this sample, the researcher used total sampling. She took two classes from the third year; class A and class B. The number of sample members from class A was 29 students and from class B was 25 students. The data of this study were gathered using reading test on recount text in the form of multiple choice. It was focused on title, first paragraph and first sentence under each heading. Before the researcher gave the real test, she tried it out since the instrument was categorized nonstandard test.The result of the try out test was used to analyze item difficulties and item discrimination and to know the reliability of the test. It was found that the reliability of the test was 0.81, (see Appendix 5).This means that the instrument was very high as the measure for collecting data. Based on the result of this study, it was found thatthe third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University had problems in previewing the title of recount text. It was indicated by the fact that 18 students (33.33%) had no problems and 36 students (66.67%) had problems in previewing the title (see Appendix 17). It was also found those 12 students (22.22%) had no problems and 42 students (70.37%) had problems (see Appendix 21). It was indicated by the fact that 16 students (29.63%) had no problems and 38 students (70.37%)) had problems (see Appendix 25). The problems of the third year students in previewing recount text were had problems. It was indicated that 18 students (33.33%) had no problems and 36 students (66.67%) had problems (see Table 4.1). Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University had problems in previewing recount text.In line with this conclusion, the teachers are suggested to explain more comprehensively about the material of previewing recount text and give more exercises to students to improve their ability in previewing recount text and the students are suggested to do more exercises in previewing recount text.For further researcher, the researcher hopes that he/she will conduct the research to do relevant research from different point of view and another kind of text.
