Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the second year students’ errors in writing complex past sentences at English Department of Bung Hatta University.Descriptive method was used as the design of this research.The number of population members was 48 students.The researcher used total sampling to select the sample and the total number of sample members was 48 students.The instrument used to get the data was subjective test to the form of writing sentences.The students were asked to write an complex sentences based on the topics provided.It was found that the reliability index of the test was 0.82.Then,the test was valid in term of content validity(see Appendix 5). The result of this research showed that in general,the second year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University had errors in writing complex past sentences by the fact that (10,42 %)of sample members who made errors. It was proved by the findings that 19,53% students’ errors in omission, 8,75% students’ errors in addition, 7,08% students’ errors in misformation, 3,75% students’ errors in misordering (see appendix 7). Based on the result of this researcher, the researcher concluded that thesecond year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University made errors in writing complex past sentences. Dealing with the conclusions, the researcher suggests to the lecturers explanation and more exercises about material to improve their ability.The researcher also suggests to the students to improve their ability in learn more about types of errors, especially in writing complex past sentences.For the next researcher, the researcher suggests to find out and analyze the factors that influence students’ errors in writing complex past sentences.
