Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out the ability of the third year students in writing conditional sentence at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The population of this research was the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The total number of population members of this research was 54 students. They were divided into two classes, class A and class B. Due to the number of population members; the researcher used total sampling/census sampling. The instrument which was used to get the data was writing sentence test in writing conditional sentence. Based on the result of data analysis, the researcher found that the reliability index of the test by using inter rater method was 0.90. From the result of analyzing the data, the researcher found in general that the students’ ability in writing conditional sentence was moderate. It was proved by the data, there were 13 students (24.10%) classified into very good, 12 students (22.20%) classified into good, 15 students (27.80%) classified into moderate and 14 students (25.90%) classified into bad. In writing conditional sentence type 1 in positive form, there were 27 students (50.00%) who got very good ability, 15 students (27.80%) who got good ability, 5 students (9.30%) who got moderate ability and 7 students (12,90%) who got bad ability. In writing conditional sentence type 2 in positive form, there were 19 students (35.20%) who got very good ability, 16 students (29.60%) who got good ability, 4 students (7.40%) who got moderate ability and 15 students (27.80%) who got bad ability. In writing conditional sentence type 3, there were 10 students (18.50%) who got very good ability, 11 students (20.40%) who got good ability, 4 students (7.40%) who got moderate ability and 29 students (53.70%) who got bad ability. Finally, based on the findings, it could be concluded that the third year students’ ability in writing conditional sentence was moderate. For suggestion, the English lecturers are expected to give more exercises and real examples in their life (such as their hope, want or others) to make students more understand. The English lecturers are suggested to consider some strategies to improve their students’ ability. For the students, they are suggested to do more practices in writing especially in writing conditional sentence to improve their ability. The students must be able to follow the rules in making conditional sentence type 1, type 2 or type 3. They must use correct tense, mechanics and the sentence also has meaning of each clause that they write.
