Abstract

This research was aimed to find out the correlation between students’ grammatical mastery and their frequency in watching English news program toward their ability to comprehend news item text on tenth grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Lubuk Basung.The number of population members was 397 students. The researcher took two classes as sample by using cluster random sampling technique. The researcher gathered the data by using grammar test, questionnaire, and reading test. To analyze the data the researcher used the Person Product Moment Formula and Multiple Correlation Formula. The researcher found that 51,5 % grammatical mastery was moderate. He also found that 54.5 % students’ frequency in watching English news program on television was moderate. Then 63.6 % students’ ability to comprehend news item text was moderate. The value of coefficient correlation between students’ grammatical mastery and their ability to comprehend news item text was 0.98. The value of coefficient correlation between students’ frequency in watching English news program on television and their ability to comprehend news item text was 0.70. The value of coefficient correlation between students’ grammatical mastery and their frequency in watching English news program on television toward their ability to comprehend news item text was 0.98 and its f- counted 36.37. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that there was a significant correlation between students’ grammar mastery and their frequency in watching English news program toward their ability to comprehend news item text on tenth grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Lubuk Basung.
