Abstract

This research was aimed to describe the ability of the third year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University in summarizing short story. The design of this research was descriptive. The number of population members was 54 students, and the number of sample of was 43 students. The researcher used total sampling in choosing sample. The instrument used in this research was reading test in the form essay, and the reliability index of the test was 0.80. The result of the data analysis showed the students had moderate ability in summarizing short story.In fact 8 students (18.60 %) had high ability, 27 students (62.80 %) had moderate ability and 8 students (18.60 %) had low ability. Specifically, the result of the research showed that: (1) 7 student (16.30 %) had high ability, 32 students (74.40 %) had moderate ability, and 4 students (9.30 %) had low ability in summarizing fiction story; (2) 9 students (20.93 %) had high ability, 28 students (65.12 %) had moderate ability, and 6 students (13.95 %) had low ability in summarizing non-fiction story. Based on the result of this research, English teachers are suggested to improve their teaching learning process and give more exercises on summarizing short story. The students are expected to learn more about short story and do more exercises on it to improve their ability.
