Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the ability of the fourth year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University in comprehending short story of A Visit of Charity. This research is limited to the students’ ability in comprehending the plot, characters, setting, symbol and point of view in the short story of A Visit of Charity. The design of this research was descriptive. The population of this research was the fourth year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The number of population members was 82 students. To select the sample, the researcher used simple random sampling technique. The researcher chose 25 students randomly and the data were collected by giving a reading test. To know reliability of the test, the researcher used split half method. The reliability index of this test was .80 and it was categorized into high. In general, the result of the data analysis revealed that most of the fourth year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University had very good ability (24%), had good ability (16%), had moderate ability (24%) and bad ability (36%) in comprehending short story of a Visit of Charity. In specific, the result of the data analysis revealed that most of fourth year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University had moderateand bad (60%) in comprehending the plot, had very good and good ability (68%) in comprehending the character , had moderate and bad ability (64%) in comprehending the setting, had very good and good ability (52%) in comprehending the symbol, and had bad ability (60%) in comprehending the point of view in the short story of a Visit of Charity. Finally, based on the findings, it could be concluded that many students of the fourth year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University had problem in comprehending short story of a Visit of Charity. Consequently, it is suggested to lecturer who teach reading to give students more explanation about short story and give more exercises to improve their skills. The students are suggested to learn more about short story and to do more exercises in order to improve their ability in comprehending short story.
