The aim of this research was describingthe speaking ability of the first grade students at SMPN 14 Padang in Telling Their Daily Activities. The design of this research was descriptive method. The population of this research was the first grade students at SMPN 14 Padang. The total number of population was 300 students. They were distributed into nine classes; class VII 1, VII 2, VII 3, VII 4, VII 5, VII 6, VII 7,VII 8 and VII 9. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique to select the sample. The total number of sample members was 62. The data were collected through speaking test. The researcher asked the students to tell their daily activities in front of the class one by one. The researcher only measured the ability of the first grade students’ speaking ability in telling daily activity by considering five components of speaking: content, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and fluency. Firstly, she presented the raw score of each sample, converted the student’s score into mastery level, classified students’ ability into high ability and low ablity, found the percentage of students who had high ability and low ability, and interpreted the result of data analysis. Based on the result of data analysis, the first grade students’ speaking ability in telling their daily activities at SMPN 14 Padang in general was low. It was proved by the evidence that 85.49% (53 students) of them cannot tell their daily activity orally. There are 79.03% (49 students) had been classified in high ability in expressing ideas (content) in telling daily activities. 69.36% (43 students) who had been classified in low ability in grammar in telling daily activities, 82.26% (51 students) who had been classified into high ability in vocabulary in telling daily activities, 100% (62 students) who had been classified in low ability in pronouncing word in telling daily activities and 100% (62 students) who had been classified in low ability in fluency in telling daily activities. Based on the researchers’ finding, the researcher concludes that the speaking ability of the first grade students in telling daily activities was low. Relating to this conclusion, she suggested English teachers to consider the five components when measuring students’ speaking ability in telling daily activities. For students who had low ability in speaking, she suggested the students to do more practice and improve their comprehension about material that had been learned in school especially speaking, study hard about grammar, enrich vocabulary, practice in pronouncing word, and improve their ability in fluency. The teacher can consider the appropriate way to improve students speaking ability in pronunciation and fluency, therefore it can help the students improve their ability in speaking.
