Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the ability of the second year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University in describing family life. The design of this research was descriptive. The population of this research was 45 second year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University. In selecting the sample, the researcher used simple random sampling technique. The number of sample was 23 students. In collecting data, the researcher used speaking test. The researcher asked the students to describe family life one by one based on the alternative topics: family tree, true love, wedding ceremony, baby, home assignment, parenting problem. The researcher only measured the ability of the second year students’ speaking describing family life by considering five components of speaking: content, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and fluency. In analyzing the data, the researcher did several steps. She presented the raw score of each sample, calculated average score (M), and standard deviation (SD), classified the students who got high to low ability, and counted the percentage of them. Based on the result of data analysis, it was indicated that the second year students’ at English Department of Bung Hatta University, Padang in general was moderate. It was proved by the evidence that there were 60.87 % students classified into moderate in describing family life, 65.22 % students classified into moderate criteria in organizing idea (content), 78.26 % students classified into moderate criteria in using grammar, 52.17 % students classified into moderate criteria in appropriate vocabulary, 60.87 % students classified into moderate criteria in terms of fluency, and 65.22 % students classified into moderate criteria in terms of pronunciation.
