Abstract

This research was attempted to describe the second year students‟ speaking ability in social communication at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The design of this research was descriptive method. The members population of this research were 44 students. The researcher used total sampling technique in taking the sample, the students were distributed into two classes. In collecting data, the reseacher used speaking test. The researcher asked the students to do dialogue on the topics that they have chosen. The researcher only measured the ability of the second year students‟ speaking ability in social communication by considering the fifth components of speaking (content, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency). Based on the result of the data analysis, the researcher found the reliability coeffecient correlation was .85. In analyzing the data, the researcher did several steps. Firstly, she presented the raw score of each sample, calculated average score (M), and standard deviation (SD), classified the students who got high to low ability, and counted the percentage of them. After analyzing the data it was found that 65.91% of students who got moderate ability in social communications. In more specific it can be concluded that 31 out of 44 students (70.46%) got moderate ability in expressing greeting, 35 out of 44 students (79.55%) got moderate ability in expressing congratulation, and 35 out of 44 students (79.55%) got moderate ability in expressing apologies. Based on the research finding, it can be concluded that the second year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University in social communication was moderate. Relating to this conclusion, she suggested to lecturer to improve their students‟ speaking ability especially more practice in social communication. The students are expected to improve their speaking ability in social communication into high ability through practicing speaking especially in social communication.
