Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the second year students’ grammatical errors in writing a paragraph about playmate at English Department of Bung Hatta University. Descriptive method was used as the design of this research. The number of population members was 48 students. The researcher used total sampling to select the sample and the total number of sample members was 48 students. The instrument used to get the data was writing a paragraph test. The students were asked to write a paragraph about playmate between 8-15 sentences in simple present tense and chose one of the title of the playmate that was availabe. It was found that the reliability index of the test was very high correlation (0,99). It meant that the test was reliable. Then, the test was valid in term of content validity (see Appendix 5). The result of this research showed that in general, the second year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University made grammatical errors in writing a paragraph about playmate. It was proved by the finding that 44 (92%) had errors and 4 students (8,3) % had no error. In detail, 40 students (83%) made omission error and 8 students (17%) did not make error in the form omission (see Appendix 6), 18 students (37,5%) made addition error and 31 students (64,5%) did not make error in the form addition ( see Appendix 7), 7 students (14,6%) made misformation error and 41 students (85%) did not make error in the form misformation (see Appendix 8), 5 students (10%) made misordering error and 43 students (89%) did not make error in the form misordering (see Appendix 9). Referring to the result of this research, the researcher concluded that the second year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University had made grammatical errors in writing a paragraph about playmate. Dealing with the conclusion, the researcher suggested to the lecturers to explain and to give the students several materials and exercises about simple present tense and use interesting media or method in learning, especially about the use of article, plural form, and be in writing sentences or a paragraph well. The students are suggested to improve their competence in writing a paragraph especially in writing a paragraph in simple present tense, the students to pay attention in understanding the article, plural form, and be. The other researchers are suggested to find out other relevant aspects about grammatical error in writing, it is like students’ grammatical error in writing spoof text made by the second year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University.
