Abstract

This research was aimed to find out the correlation between third year students` learning strategy and their vocabulary mastery toward their ability in writing descriptive paragraph at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The numbers of population members of this study were 54. For correlational study, approximately 30 samples are regarded enough that relates variables. The researcher took the sample by using simple random sampling technique. The researcher gathered the data by using questionnaire to measure students learning strategy, using vocabulary test to measure vocabulary mastery and writing test to measure writing ability. To analyze the data the researcher used the Person Product Moment Formula and Double Correlation Formula. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that, first the dominant learning strategy used by students was memory strategy (84%). Second, students’ vocabulary mastery was moderate (57%). Third, the students’ ability in writing descriptive paragraph was moderate (70%).There were three coefficient correlation, first the value of coefficient correlation between students’ learning strategy and their ability in writing descriptive paragraph was significant (r counted 0.88 > r table 0.361). Second, the value of coefficient correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their ability in writing descriptive paragraph was significant (r counted 0.92 > r table 0.361). Third, the value of coefficient of correlation between students’ learning strategy and their vocabulary mastery toward their ability in writing descriptive paragraph was significant (f counted 66.22 > f table 3.35) α 0.05 and the degree of freedom (df) n-k-1 (27). Therefore, the relationship between three variables, between students’ learning strategy and their vocabulary mastery toward their ability in writing descriptive paragraph was significant. It means that the alternative hypothesis stating there was significant correlation between students learning strategy and their vocabulary mastery toward their ability in writing descriptive paragraph was accepted. Learning from the result, there was a significant correlation between students’ learning strategy and their vocabulary toward their ability in writing descriptive paragraph. It can be concluded that students’ learning strategy and their vocabulary mastery can influence their ability in writing descriptive paragraph.
