Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the ability of the second year students in comprehending topic and stated main idea in English paragraphs of English department of Bung Hatta University. The design of this research was descriptive research. The population of this study was the second year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University. The number of population members was 56 students: they were divided into 2 classes. The researcher used total sampling technique in this research. The instrument used to collect the data was reading test. The researcher found that the reliability of the test was very high (0.83). It means test was reliable. Then, the test was valid in term of content validity.(see appendix 5) The result of the data analysis showed that the student ability in comprehending topic and stated main idea in English paragraphs was moderate. In general was proved that 14.28% of students had high ability, 69.64% of students had moderate ability and 16.07% of students had low ability (see appendix 14). It was also found that 19.64% of students had high ability in comprehending topic in English paragraphs, 67.85% of students had moderate ability and 12.50% of students had low ability in comprehending topic in English paragraphs ( see appendix 16). In comprehending stated main idea in English paragraphs, 10.71% of students had high ability, 69.64% of students had moderate and, 19.64% of students had low ability. (see appendix 20) Based on the findings of this study, it can be concluded that the students’ ability in comprehending topic and stated main idea in English paragraphs was moderate. In relation to the conclusions, the researcher suggests the lecturers of English Department of Bung Hatta University to give more questions and explanations to the students about topic and stated main idea in English Paragraphs, ask the students to provide various exercises about topic and stated main idea in English paragraphs. For the students, they are suggested to learn more about topic and stated main idea and to do more exercises about it. The researcher suggests to the next researcher to find out the students problems in comprehending topic and stated main idea in English paragraphs.
