Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the second grade students’ speaking ability in admitting and denying facts at SMP Pertiwi 2 Padang. This research was limited to five components of speaking skills; comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, fluency and pronunciation. Descriptive method was used as the design of this research. The population of this research was the second grade students of SMP Pertiwi 2 Padang. The number of population was 114 students which were divided into four classes. There are 32 students in class (VIII.1), 32 students in class (VIII.2), 26 students in class (VIII.3), and 24 students in class (VIII.4). The researcher used simple random sampling technique to select the sample and the total number of sample was 24 students; 6 students in class (VIII.1), 6 students in class (VIII.2), 6 students in class (VIII.3), and 6 students in class (VIII.4). The instrument used to collect data is speaking test. To make test reliable, the researcher used inter rater technique by using two scorers. The result showed that the test was reliable. It is supported by the fact that the result of coefficient correlation is .86 (see Appendix 4). It was categorized as very high correlation. Then, the test was valid in term of content validity because it had covered all material which students had learnt. Based on data analysis, the mean score was 15.1 and standard deviation was 1.83. It was found that the students’ speaking ability in admitting and denying facts in general was moderate. It could be supported by the facts that 2 students (8.33%) had high ability, 20 students (83.34%) had moderate ability and 2 students (8.33%) had low ability (see Appendix 10). In more specific it can be concluded that 22 students (91.67%) had moderate ability in organizing idea (content), 15 students (62.5%) had moderate ability in using grammar, 17 students (70.83%) had moderate ability in appropriate vocabulary, 15 students (62.5%) had moderate ability in terms of fluency, and 14 students (58.33%) had moderate ability in terms of pronunciation. By having known that the students’ speaking ability in admitting and denying facts, the researcher gave suggestions to teachers, the students and the further researcher. The teachers are suggested to explain and review about the material of expression. The students are suggested to study harder and do more practice in speaking. The further researchers are expected to find and analyze the factors which cause the students had moderate ability in admitting and denying facts, so students’ ability can be improved.
