Abstract

The goal of this research was to describe the first year students’ ability in understanding simple present and present continuous tense at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The research design was descriptive. The first year students was the population. Total number of the population was 37. The researcher used all members as sample in this research. The sample was choosen by total or census sampling. The researcher limited her research in understanding simple present and present continuous tense in using affirmative, negative and interrogative sentence. Before the researcher did the real test, she had tried out it to see the reliability. The result of try out showed that the reliability of the test was 0.79. It means that the test was reliable. The instrumentation of the research is grammar test in the form of multiple choice.For the real test the researcher used 33 test item, it consisted of 11 items in affirmative sentence, 9 items in negative sentence, and 13 items in interrogative sentence. The researcher used raw score, the researcher used Pearson Product Moment formula and Spearman Brown formula to find reliability of the test, and then calculated the students’ score, classified the students who got very good, good, moderate and bad ability. Finally, she counted the percentage of the member of students according to their ability. Generally, the result of this research showed that the ability of the first year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University was very good. It was indicated by the fact that 22 students (66.66%) who got very good ability in affirmative sentence of simple present sentence, 25 students (75.75%) who got very good ability in negative sentence of simple present sentence, 18 students (54.54%) who got very good ability in affirmative sentence of simple present continuous sentence, 30 students (90.90%) who got very good ability in negative sentence of simple present continuous sentence, and 18 students (54.54%) who got very good ability in interrogative sentence of simple present continuous sentence. Based on the result above, a simple conclusion could be drawn that the students’ ability in understanding simple present and present continuous tense was very good. Since the result was very good, the lecturersshould try to keep their ability by giving more exercises in harder level to the students who got very goodability and give more practices, attention and motivation to the students who got bad ability in understanding those tensesin understanding simple present and present continuous tense.The further researchers expected to find and analyze the factors which cause the students ability in understanding simple present and present continuous tense
