Abstract

The aim of this research was describing the speaking ability of the second grade students at SMPN 10 Padang in Expression of Invitation in English. The design of this research was descriptive method. The population of this research was the second grade students at SMPN 10 Padang. The total number of population was 324 students. They were distributed into eight classes, class VIII A, VIII B, VIII C, VIII D, VIII E, VIII F, VIII G, VIII H. The researcher used simple random sampling technique to select the sample. The total number of sample members was 40. The data were collected through speaking test. The researcher asked the students to do dialogue in pairs in front of the classroom. The researcher only measured the ability of the second grade students’ speaking ability in expression of invitation by considering five components of speaking: content, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and fluency. Firstly, she presented the raw score of each sample, calculated average score, classified the students who got high to low ability and counted the percentage of them. Based on the result of data analysis, the second grade students’ speaking ability in expression of invitation at SMPN 10 Padang in general was high. It was proved by the evidence that 52.5% (21 students) of them can use expression of invitation well. There were 75% (30 students) who had been classified in high ability in expressing ideas (content) in expression of invitation, 45% (18 students) who had been classified into low ability in pronouncing the word in expression of invitation, 70% (28 students) who had been classified into high ability in using correct grammar in expression of invitation, 80% (32 students) who had been classified into high ability in using appropriative vocabulary in expression of invitation and 47.5% (19 students) who had been classified into low ability in fluency. Based on the researchers’ finding, the researcher concludes that the speaking ability of the second grade students in expression of invitation was high. Relating to this conclusion, she suggested English teachers to ask students to used expression of invitation in daily life. She also suggested English teachers to give students more exercises that difficult than before to make them more understood. And for students who have difficulties in speaking, she suggested English teachers to improve students’ ability in expression of invitation. The teacher can consider the appropriate ways to improve students speaking ability for example asked students to do more practices especially in pronunciation and fluency
