Abstract
This research was aimed to find out the correlation of vocabulary mastery and reading ability toward their ability to translate short story from English into Indonesian of the third year students of English Department at Bung Hatta University. The sample of this study is 33 students taken cluster random sampling from the third year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University. The method used in this study was a quantitative method and the technique used in this study was multiple correlational technique. In collecting the data, the vocabulary test, reading test and translation test are used. The result of this study showed that students’ vocabulary mastery was moderate with Mean was 16.16 and Standard Deviation was 2.83. It is indicated that 3 students had low ability (9.09%), 25 students had moderate ability (75.76%) and 5 students had high ability (15.15%). It was also found that students’ reading ability was moderate Mean was 15.18 and Standard Deviation was 1.69. It was indicated that 5 students had low ability (15.15%), 22 students had moderate ability (66.67%) and 6 students had high ability (18.18%). It was also found that students’ translation appropriateness was moderate Mean was 57.69 and Standard Deviation was 9.94. It is indicated that 5 students had low ability (15.15%), 25 students had moderate ability (75.75%) and 3 students had high ability (9.09%).There was a very high correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their ability to translate short story. It is proved by the coefficient correlation = 0.92. It was classified as having very high correlation. There was a high correlation between reading ability and their ability to translate short story. It is proved by the coefficient correlation = 0.72. It was classified as having high correlation. There was a very high correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading ability toward their ability to translate short story. It is proved by the coefficient correlation = 0.99. It was classified as having very high correlation. In testing hypothesis whether there is significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and their ability to translate short story or not, the researcher compared rcounted and rtable. It was found that rcount (0.92) was bigger than rtable (0.329). There is significant correlation between reading ability and their ability to translate to translate short story or not, the researcher compared rcounted and rtable. It was found that rcount (0.72) was bigger than rtable (0.329). There is significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and 6 reading ability toward their ability to translate short story or not, the researcher compared fcounted and ftable. It was found that fcount (739.18) was bigger than ftable (3.32). In addition the researcher used the level of significance 0.05 and the degree of freedom (df=n-2). It was considered that the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected that there is no significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading ability toward their to translate short story and the alternative hypothesis (HA) is accepted that there is a significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading ability toward their to translate short story. In conclusion, if the students’ vocabulary mastery will be good, reading ability will be good and translation will be good.
